Timing is everything -- and luckily for Dad, there will be a lot of things to celebrate this Father’s Day. As restaurants, parks, golf courses and more open their doors once again, there are heaps of ways to make Dad feel special and at the same time experience new delights.
Here are just a few things to do on Father’s Day throughout the Great Rivers and Routes region of southwest Illinois.
Did Someone Say Go Outside?
What makes your dad smile? Summer is here and there are quite a few dads who enjoy a day in the great outdoors. And of course, there is plenty of room to roam in the six county Great Rivers & Routes region. A great ‘daytripping’ adventure should include a trip to Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton where there are amazing views of the Illinois River and room to stretch out on the trails. Or maybe let him try his hand at horseback riding and take a 45-minute trail ride through the park with the Pere Marquette Riding Stables. (Travel Tip: Reservations are required).
Maybe Dad would like to do a little fishing. Horseshoe Lake State Park outside Collinsville, IL offers a great spot to fish with plenty of catfish, bass, and crappie ready to bite. The Watershed Nature Center in Edwardsville offers over 40 acres of prairie, forest, and wetland habitats that could give dad that Great Outdoors feeling!. Check out these great outdoor spots too!
Create a Laid Back Day
After a tough week, Dad might just enjoy a quiet day savoring the refreshments available in the region.
Take a nice scenic drive down the Great River Road between Alton and Grafton, IL where the sun shimmers on the water the road stretches for miles. Grab a bite to eat in Grafton which has some fun riverside restaurants that offer complementary views. If Dad likes old fashioned BBQ you can stop by the Hawg Pit for music, food and fun. If he is looking for an 'on the river seafood theme', pop into the Grafton Oyster Bar. The Loading Dock is booming with crowds of people craving the views of the flowing Mighty Mississippi River and the relaxation gained from this perfect spot. Enjoy the views at The Grafton Winery and revel in the signature wines..
If craft beer is dad’s thing, create a craft beer trail for him. Journey to Opera House Brewing Company in Hillsboro. Stop by Global Brew Tap House in Edwardsville, and make sure to get some of their crispy tots along with a drink. Check out the craft beer delights at Peel Woodfired Pizza and Recess Brewery in Edwardsville and Old Bakery Beer Company in Alton. Cool Down with Dad
The best way to finish up any Father’s Day is with a nice cold scoop of ice cream and this region really scoops up the best. Anywhere you go you'll find the perfect toppings for a memorable day. City Scoops Creamery in Troy has some great specialty flavors like cookie monster and Andes chocolate chip mint. Or hit up the newer Blue Ice Creamery in East Alton, where hard-served ice cream is handmade and delicious. You can’t go wrong with a stop at Bobby’s Frozen Custard in Collinsville, this place has been serving ice cream for 30 years and offer a wide variety of flavors and toppings.
