Pies are as American as pizza is American: Americans took a great idea, adapted it to their needs and ran with it. Americans of the past used what they had available locally and made the most from it. You might be thinking that pies are just for dessert but, for earlier Americans, they were often considered survival food. Sometimes, they ate pie for breakfast, lunch and dinner for months at a time.

Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Speaker Catherine Lambrecht will present the history of pies in America and the state. She will explore Illinois’ contribution to the country’s pie culture including areas on the evolution of pies over the years, pumpkin pies (and their fillings), connection to pecan pies, Johnny Appleseed’s roles, and heirloom state fair recipes.

Those that attend the program are encouraged to bring their own pie recipes to share after the program is finished.

History of American Pies will be presented on October 7, 2023 at 2 PM in the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site Theater. It is free and open to the public courtesy of the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Grant which aims to connect the people of Illinois with their history.
