Lewis and Clark Departure Celebration 2023
Celebrate the famous departure of the Lewis and Clark 'Corps of Discovery' expedition at the State Historic Site. The group of 33 travelers departed at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers in 1804, travelling over 8,000 miles across the rugged North American landscape to the future state of Oregon. They encountered Native American tribes, forded rivers, and fought harsh weather, disease, and starvation. Upon their return in 1806, they brought back a trove of information about the American West, its lands, waterways, and people. Witness military re-enactors, historic artisans, live animals from the Treehouse Wildlife Center, and historic scientific displays at the site during this 2-day event educating and entertaining visitors of all ages! The Lewis and Clark Historic Site is close to the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower- from three separate viewing balconies view the confluence point of the great rivers and see first-hand the origin-point of the famous journey!
Reenactors, historic artisans, and more will celebrate this important date in Illinois and American history. Demonstrations will include artillery, muskets, candle making, fiber arts, cooking, and more. Volunteers will exhibit the replica of the White Pirogue the Expedition journeyed in. With plenty to see and do, this event is perfect for any age and any previous historical knowledge.
The Departure Event runs from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday May 13 and Sunday May 14 and is free to the Public!
