As the water begins to freeze at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi River, the Loading Dock Ice Rink offers a place like no other to celebrate ice and winter right on the riverfront. Embrace the cold with that special someone or your friends and family and glide into smiles, laughs and unforgettable memories.
The rink is housed inside the historic Boatworks building at The Loading Dock. As you let the crisp air breeze through your hair, understand that this place has a deep history along the river that built many boats and made many repairs. As you skate across the pearl colored ice, it is reminiscent of the days the place served as a button factory. The buttons were made from mussel shells lined brilliantly in that pearl color that now shimmers as the floor of the ice rink.
As you make your way round and round the rink taking in the moments and celebrating this place, you’ll need to take a break to step outside and enjoy the winter riverfront scenes. You might catch a glimpse of a towboat and barge running the rivers or an American Bald Eagle, Trumpeter Swan or occasionally, the lost flock of pelicans still making their way south for the winter. No matter what you see, you won’t be sorry you spent the day or night circling the ice with that special someone in your life! Make your plans now to celebrate winter, ice and life all along the Meeting of the Great Rivers!
