The town was founded in 1892 as one of the first permanent settlements in Madison County. Named Glen Carbon in honor of its coal mining heritage, it was a popular hub for settlers to the area. The railroad operated in the town until 2000 and was also a central feature of the town's character and economy. Today, Glen Carbon has over 300 businesses that call it home.
