Meet River Rae -- Ambassador of the Byway Discovery Center

River Rae was born where great rivers come together—along the bluffs, floodplains, and riverbanks of the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. From the air, Rae learned to see how the Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri Rivers shape the land, support wildlife, and sustain the communities that depend on them.

As a dragonfly, River Rae thrives where land and water are healthy. Flying above working rivers, restored wetlands, farms, forests, and public lands, Rae observes how people and nature share this landscape. Barges move goods, farmers care for fertile soils, wildlife finds shelter, and visitors explore trails and overlooks—all connected by the rivers that make this place possible.

River Rae helps visitors understand that these are not just scenic rivers, but working rivers—essential to commerce, recreation, and daily life—and that stewardship ensures they remain strong for future generations. By caring for public lands, protecting water quality, and respecting the balance between use and conservation, we help the rivers continue to work for everyone.

Now serving as the ambassador of the Byway Discovery Center at Great Rivers Park, River Rae invites visitors to look closer, learn more, and discover how thoughtful stewardship of land and water keeps the Meeting of the Great Rivers healthy, productive, and beautiful.

River Rae's Rules

How we care for our working rivers and public lands at the Byway Discovery Center at Great Rivers Park-

1. Respect the Rivers at Work
These rivers move goods, support wildlife, and welcome visitors. Share the water
and shoreline safely and responsibly.

2. Leave the Land Better Than You Found It

Pack out trash, stay on trails, and help protect plants, soils, and habitats.

3. Protecting the Water

What happens on land flows to the river. Small choices—like picking up litter—make a big difference.

4. Sharing Space with Wildlife

Watch, listen, and enjoy from a distance. Wild places work best when wildlife feels at home.

5. Honor the People of the River

From river workers to farmers and stewards, many people care for this landscape every day. Respect their work and their land.

6. Explore with Curiosity

Ask questions. Learn how rivers shape the land and why stewardship matters.

7. Play Safely and Thoughtfully

Have fun on trails, overlooks, and waterways—while looking out for others and the environment.

8. Be a Steward Every Day

Caring for rivers and public lands doesn’t stop here. Take what you learn home and keep the ripple going.
