Alton Historic Kit Homes Tour
In the early 1900's, seven companies: Sears, Gordon Van Tine, Lewis, Aladdin, Montgomery Ward, Sterling and Harris Brothers sold kit homes nationally. Individuals would select a home from a catalog, 12,000 pieces would be shipped by rail, and a skilled carpenter would assemble the house in 90 days. Simple right?
Nineteen addresses are included in the tour. Ten of the houses are featured with the picture of the house from the manufacturer’s catalog and a paragraph about the house written by Rosemary Thornton.
The tour can be downloaded from the AALA’s website (www.altonlandmarks.org).
