Mississippi River State Fish and Wildlife Area is an outdoor paradise with 15 wildlife management areas and 13 public access areas located along 75 miles of two major rivers. Add to this the awe-inspiring bluffs towering over the river valley, providing breathtaking views. Park activities include boating, canoeing, fishing, hunting and picnicking.

This park lies within the Mississippi River Valley and includes portions of both the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Total area is 24,386 acres with 16,875 of those acres actively managed for wetland habitat enhancement and public recreation. The main emphasis is wetland management with waterfowl as the primary species of concern. Hunters, anglers, boaters and birdwatchers are sure to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Groups of 25 or more are welcome and encouraged to use the parks' facilities, but are required to register in advance with the site office to avoid crowding or scheduling conflicts.

At least one responsible adult must accompany each group of 15 minors.

Pets must be kept on leashes at all times.

Actions by nature can result in the closure of roads and other facilities. Please call ahead to the park office before making the trip in inclement weather.

There is also ample opportunity for access to civilization just a few miles away. A drive on the nearby, scenic Great River Road leads through Grafton - past the quaint 19th century Village of Elsah and on to Alton. There are many antique and other specialty stores, accommodations and restaurants along the way. A ride on the Brussels Ferry crosses the Illinois River and provides entry into Calhoun County, where orchards, roadside markets, and glimpses of history await. There truly is something for every type of visitor to this area.
