Downtown Alton, better known for its history, architecture, and its dramatic views overlooking the Mississippi River, is experiencing a new renaissance: a resurgence in the city’s local art scene that’s weaving artists, galleries, classes, and community together through the Alton Art Loop. Bluff City Bazaar
A collective founded by local artist Julie Harper alongside creators Crystal Stevens of Flourish Farmstead, Shea Radcliff of Radcliff's Rad Thrifts, Kelly Lee of Hype of Type, Kaylin Gauthier of River City Oddities, and Tina Marlow of Shake Rag Studio, Bluff City Bazaar offers boutique and vintage clothing and jewelry, gifts, herbal products, art and decor items, insect taxidermy, and more with a focus on recycled, thrifted, and green materials.
Mooneyham Art
Displaying works by local, regional, national, and even international artists, Mooneyham Art offers a wide range of artistic mediums, from paintings and photography to fine-crafted jewelry, sculpture, and ceramics.
Under the curation of Charles Mooneyham and co-curator Stephen Scordias, Mooneyham Art LLC takes a unique approach to accessibility—requiring all exhibiting artists to offer giclée prints of their work, ensuring art lovers at every budget level can take home a piece of the exhibition.
Jacoby Arts Center
Jacoby Arts Center has been a pillar of the Alton community for over 20 years. Alongside offering art classes for both children and adults, art events, and summer camps, Jacoby also exhibits local and regional artists’ work in their on-site gallery, and is part of the Alton Art Loop.
Starting as the Madison County Art Council, supporting artists and arts organizations across seventeen counties, Jacoby grew until opening a brick & mortar location off Broadway in Downtown Alton in 2006 at the historic C. J. Jacoby and Co, Inc. building (where Jacoby took its name). Jacoby Arts Center moved to their current location at 208 State Street in early 2025.
Picture This & More
Picture This and More, nestled off central Broadway, is a custom framing business and local art gallery. Picture This offers professionally framed and matted landscape, wildlife, and architectural photography, watercolor and acrylic painted originals, multi-media wall art, prints, and hand-made gifts all from southwestern Illinois crafters. Picture This collaborates with Lewis and Clark Community College for student art shows and always has new items in the gallery to fill the niche in your blank space.
Party on Broadway
Party on Broadway brings out the crafter in everyone- get creative with your friends by taking part in one of Party On Broadway's guided crafting classes- enjoy painting and Pinterest parties and other fun events or, if you prefer, shop from a wide selection of finished home décor. Party on Broadway offers laser-cut crafts, holiday and personalized crafts, and planned art party events.
Mississippi Mud Pottery
Founded by Ken and Brenda Barnett in 1983 and passed on to Chad Nelson and Felicia Breen in 2006, Mississippi Mud Pottery specializes in handmade, wheel-thrown pottery. The shop and studio, located centrally on downtown East Broadway, offers gorgeous, unique stoneware mugs, plates, serving-ware, soap dispensers, lamps, holiday ornaments, and more.
Every piece is made carefully by Chad, Felicia, and their small local team. Watch them work the throwing wheel in the studio through the shop's viewing window. Order custom pieces for your home or loved ones or buy pre-made pieces from the gallery floor.
Alton Stained Glass Works
Alton Stained Glass Works has served the region since 1993 with timeless glass artworks including windowpanes, Tiffany-style and flat-panel lamps, ornaments, sun catchers, glass beads, and more. Order a custom piece for your space or peruse the Glass Work's glimmering gallery for pre-made pieces.
Every work is unique and you can make your own- join a professionally instructed class and learn to create panels, lamps, beads, and various specialty projects like garden stakes, holiday pieces, cheese boards, and dishware. Alton Stained Glass also sells cut glass sheets and materials and their kiln can be rented by experienced glass-makers on open Saturdays.
The Conservatory
Part live music venue, part art gallery, The Conservatory off East Broadway focuses on bringing the weird, wild, and different together with original music acts, art shows, and events to Downtown Alton.
Founded in 2020 by Justin Level, Caleb Lewis, & Jay ‘Hart’ Stanley, who were seeking additional studio space and a small venue, The Conservatory has grown into an eclectic art hub where creatives can come together and share their work.
Upstairs, you can find the Kooliverse, an art gallery by local creative, Michael Snider. Artists and art appreciators can join ‘Kooliverse Couture Night’ every fourth Thursday of the month, showing off Snider’s latest works, exhibiting rotating local artworks, and offering vendors, food, and conversation.
Elysian Gallery
Elysian Gallery, nestled inside the historic Mineral Springs Hotel, is a curated fine art gallery founded by photographer Jeff Bohnert.
Elysian offers a diverse selection of artwork including photography, paintings, jewelry, pottery, glass, and rotating exhibits with an emphasis on diverse, emotionally resonant work.
